19 Dec 2025 | ENEA | eurad2 logo The impact of climate change on nuclear waste management: the work package 11 of the EURAD-2 project

The EURAD-2 project is a European research and development programme that aims to bring about a significant change in European collaboration to ensure the safe and sustainable management of radioactive waste. Within the EURAD-2 project, the work package 11 „CLIMATE“, coordinated by ENEA, aims to identify knowledge gaps and provide recommendations for future research needs on the impact of climate change on radioactive waste management facilities and sites during construction, operation and post-closure phases.

19 Dec 2025 | ENEA | Winner of the 4th european nuclear competition and science camp 4th European Nuclear Competition and Science Camp for Secondary Schools

The 4th European Nuclear Competition for Secondary Schools was a unique opportunity to showcase the creativity of secondary school students and to explore the exciting world of nuclear science.

27 Nov 2024 | ENEA | Logo SELENE Powering the human return on the Moon: the SELENE Project

The SELENE project, funded by the Italian Space Agency, aims at advancing both technical and programmatic aspects needed to bring to industrial maturity a nuclear reactor-centered energy hub for a lunar outpost.

27 Nov 2024 | ENEA | New measurement cell for xenon analysis manufactured at ENEA, down face with carbon fiber window Optimization of the anticoincidence system for the detection of radioactive xenon by gamma spectrometry system

An improvement work of an anticoincidence gamma spectrometry system for the detection of noble gases located at the Laboratory of ENEA Research Center in Brasimone has been carried out. The interest of setting up and optimizing this instrument is linked to the analysis of the radioactive isotopes of xenon, which are of particular interest for the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).

27 Nov 2024 | ENEA The new Italian R&D Program for Nuclear Energy 2024-2026

A total amount of 135 M€ has been allocated for the years 2024-2026 by the Italian Ministry for the Environment and Energy Security to revamp the national R&D program in the nuclear field. Within nuclear fission R&D, the priority and focus topics are SMRs and AMRs.

24 Oct 2023 | ENEA | Evaluation newspicture Evaluation of the radionuclide concentration in the sediments of the Sacca di Goro (Italy)

Sacca di Goro, in the Adriatic Sea (north of Italy), is one of the areas affected by widespread radioisotope contamination after the Chernobyl accident. A campaign was recently conducted in its lagoon to verify the current status of some radionuclides such as 137Cs, 40K, 238U, 232Th and 226Ra in sediments.

24 Oct 2023 | ENEA ENEA’s Role in the Italian Participation to IAEA’s RANET

In January 2023 Italy registered National Assistance Capabilities to the IAEA Response and Assistance Network, RANET. These capabilities are provided by ENEA and offered to requesting Member States.

15 May 2023 | ENEA | RAFAEL Logo RAFAEL project: radioactive and chemical sensors development

The aim of the project is to develop risk analysis and forecasting system aimed at protecting ICs and national strategic assets, especially as regards the prediction of seismic phenomena. It is believed that analysis of high-resolution time series of Radon concentrations in groundwater, air and soil may be a suitable method for identifying seismic precursors. The aim of the work is to devolp new sensor technologies to create a system for forecasting, simulating and mitigating risk related to the monitoring of air, water and soil matrix.

15 May 2023 | ENEA | ENEA Benchmark newspicture International Benchmarks on LFR

In the context of international organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), three international benchmarks focused on the neutronics and thermal-hydraulics of lead-cooled fast reactors (LFR) have been recently launched under the coordination of ENEA.

15 May 2023 | ENEA Renewed interest of industry and private sector for nuclear in Italy

These last months have witnessed a renewed interest in Italy of industry, and the private sector in general, for nuclear. The reasons behind this are mainly the need to investigate options to help (1) reducing carbon dioxide emissions to cope with climate change issues, (2) decreasing electricity prices, and (3) increasing the security of energy supply by lowering the current reliance on foreign natural gas imports.

28 Dec 2022 | ENEA | Innovation in Nuclear Safety: design, experience and lessons learned Newspicture Innovation in Nuclear Safety: design, experience and lessons learned

International Workshop to share knowledge about innovative systems and technologies related to the safety of future and current reactors, supporting the technology transfer from research to industry in the field.

28 Dec 2022 | ENEA | NACIE-UP CRP on transition form forced to natural circulation Newspicture NACIE-UP CRP on transition form forced to natural circulation

An IAEA Coordinated Research Project (CRP) on Forced to natural circulation transition in the Heavy liquid metal loop NACIE-UP is currently ongoing. A numerical benchmark will assess the capabilty of numerical codes to reproduce experimental data.

28 Dec 2022 | ENEA | Noble gas sampling in air and subsurface using ultra low background high purity germanium Newspicture Noble gas sampling in air and subsurface using ultra low background high purity germanium

Instead of automated sampling for noble gases and analysing stations, manual system can be used to better accommodate costs for the equipment and flexibility of usage. One of this system has been developed by the Traceability Laboratory at the ENEA Research center of Brasimone, which was specially designed in order to keep the sampling equipment separate from the processing and measurement.

26 Sep 2022 | ENEA | Raman spectroscopy as a powerful tool for characterization of graphite used in nuclear plants Newspicture Raman spectroscopy as a powerful tool for characterization of graphite used in nuclear plants

Graphite used in nuclear plants must be disposed of properly. Prolonged aging, even at room temperature, can lead to the formation of different species, such as graphite oxide, which has the possibility of being dispersed into the environment much more easily and this entails a risk that must be taken into consideration

26 Sep 2022 | ENEA | Application of Non-Parametric Control Charts (Statistical Process Control) to radioxenon distribution at International Monitoring System stations of the CTBTO Newspicture Application of Non-Parametric Control Charts (Statistical Process Control) to radioxenon distribution at International Monitoring System stations of the CTBTO
