Strengthening Nuclear Safety Regulatory Capacity in Africa

The European Commission has recently funded a project to support African countries in the development of their nuclear safety authorities using a specific INSC instrument, called Team-Up. This project involves many European TSOs & Regulators, as ASNR, Bel V, Bureau Veritas, CSN, STUK and SUJB. The global organization of the project is endorsed by Expertise France.
Bel V is part of this pilot project involving six African countries and many European experts. The kick off meeting has been organized at the beginning of 2025 and many workshops and training sessions have been organized during this year:
- Increased regulatory capacity to assess radiation protection measures, manage spent fuel and radioactive waste
- Safety Review and Assessment including Deterministic and Probabilistic approaches
- Harmonisation of Regulations for radiation protection and nuclear safety
- Communication with the Public on Nuclear Safety and Radiological issues
- Emergency Preparedness and Response (EPR) system
- Capacity building for nuclear safety and radiation protection
This four-years project brings together more than 40 nuclear experts from 10 different countries : Belgium, Czech Republic, Egypt, Finland, France, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, South Africa and Spain. During the workshops and training sessions, all experts from Europe and African countries had it’s the opportunity to share knowledge, experiences, needs and challenges for the future development of nuclear safety and radiation protection on the African continent. After this successful first year, it’s time now to define the action plan for 2026. The work has been started and the plan will be validated during the Project Steering Committee meeting in January in South Africa under supervision of representatives of the European Commission.
