News from ETSON and its members*
22 Dec 2021 | ETSON | | The ETSON Awards 2021 First prize to an UNIBO-ENEA-IRSN team for safety studies of SMR severe accidents, second prize to a PSI team for the use of the surgical mask as an emergency dosimeter, at the EUROSAFE Forum in Paris-Montrouge. |
20 Dec 2021 | LEI | | Numerical simulation of shock absorber used for the safeguard of casks with spent fuel in case dropping To reduce SNF cask failure risk in the ISFSF building areas, where SNF cask could be lifted more than 30 cm, special design shock absorbers are installed. The main function of these shock absorbers is to reduce the dynamic loads to a fully loaded SNF cask (weight 77 - 89 t) in case of dropping and prevent or minimise the possibility to lose the tightness of the SNF cask and release of radioactive materials from SNF rod(s). Evaluation of the shock absorbers capability to withstand the dynamic load in case of an accident was performed. |
20 Dec 2021 | RATEN ICN | | International acknowledgment of the RATEN ICN research capacity RATEN ICN was designated as IAEA International Centre based on Research Reactors for the “Education and Training” and for “Joint Research and Development (R&D) Projects” fields, joining the Network of other 6 well-known institutes from the USA, France, Belgium, Korea and Russia. |
20 Dec 2021 | LEI | | LEI involvement in ETSON-SAMHYCO-NET benchmark Scientists of Lithuanian Energy Institute have recently collaborated with colleagues from other European TSOs and ETSON partners in research activities – BARCO and ETSON-SAMHYCO-NET benchmarks. |
20 Dec 2021 | RATEN ICN | | Progress on ATHENA facility implementation The Advanced Thermo-Hydraulics Experiment for Nuclear Application (ATHENA) facility will be built at Mioveni platform, on the RATEN-ICN research center premises. |
20 Dec 2021 | LEI | | LEI Ph.D. student wins MeV Summer School Award Ph.D. student Noura Elsalamouny (Lithuanian Energy Institute, Laboratory of Nuclear Installation Safety) participated in Summer School 2021 “Modelling, Experimental and Validation” (MeV) organized through the cooperation of multiple stakeholders, i.e. Argonne, Idaho and Oak-Ridge national labs. Noura worked in a team together with other students and presented joint work titled “The at-home micro reactor”. This futuristic idea was investigated in terms of the conceptual goals set, the necessary safety requirements, the design constraints, and the economic benefits of a micro-reactor installed at-home. |
08 Dec 2021 | ETSON | | The 17th edition of EUROSAFE, organized by IRSN with its ETSON partners in Paris at the "Beffroi of Montrouge» on November 22-23, 2021 Despite the sanitary and travels restrictions, 220 participants from 20 countries attended this European conference for the nuclear and radioprotection community. The symposium "After the Fukushima Daiichi accident: adapting to the unexpected" was organized by IRSN following the EUROSAFE Forum. |
08 Dec 2021 | EK CER | | Segmented mandrel ductility tests of hydrogenated fuel cladding tubes to simulate PCMI The mechanical interaction between the nuclear fuel pellets and the cladding tubes (PCMI) is very important for safety studies as this phenomenon could lead to fuel failure and release of radioactivity. During a power increase in a nuclear power plant the fuel pellets interact with the cladding due to its thermal expansion. Similarly, it is important to investigate the long-term behaviour of irradiated claddings exposed to corrosion and hydrogen uptake in normal operation and in an interim dry storage facility. |
08 Dec 2021 | VTT | | First decommissioning experiences in Finland. VTT’s FiR 1 TRIGA reactor. The Government of Finland granted Finland’s first nuclear decommissioning licence to VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland Ltd for decommissioning the FiR 1 TRIGA Mark II research reactor. The spent fuel was shipped to the U.S. Geological Survey, which will use the fuel in its own research reactor. |
08 Dec 2021 | IRSN | | Radiological and nuclear emergencies: IRSN acknowledged by the IAEA for its expertise The Deputy Director General of the Agency and Head of the Department of Nuclear Safety and Security and the Director General of IRSN signed an agreement appointing the Institute as the IAEA’s Capacity Building Centre (CBC) in the field of medical management of radiological and nuclear emergencies. |
08 Dec 2021 | IRSN | | IRSN publishes an information note on SMR safety issues Low power modular reactors, known as Small Modular Reactors (SMR), have generated growing interest in the world for several years now, and particularly in France. The Institute has just published an information note on this technology, covering safety issues. |
08 Dec 2021 | IRSN | | IRSN inaugurates three research facilities On September 29, Director General Jean-Christophe Niel inaugurated three IRSN research facilities located in the Cadarache center in southeastern France. They are a testament to the Institute’s ability to design and build innovative experimental devices, essential for carrying out research in support of its safety expertise. |
08 Dec 2021 | IRSN | | IRSN will coordinate a reply to EURATOM’s 2021-2022 call for applications in radiation protection research IRSN will coordinate a reply to EURATOM’s 2021-2022 call for applications recently published by the European Commission, regarding the creation of a partnership for radiation protection research. |
11 Oct 2021 | GRS | | FENNECS: Simulating the neutron-physical behaviour of complex reactor cores Researchers worldwide are working on small modular reactors (SMR) and microreactors (very small modular reactor, vSMR). Many of these new reactor concepts are being developed for specific applications and have special core geometries. In order to be able to simulate the neutron-physical behaviour of these cores, GRS is developing the simulation code FENNECS (Finite ElemeNt NEutroniCS). |
11 Oct 2021 | JSI | | The 30th International Conference Nuclear Energy for New Europe (NENE2021) successfully completed The jubilee 30th NENE2021 conference was attended by record 236 participants from 22 countries. Varied conference program was accompanied by the ENEN & OECD-NEA Workshop regarding nuclear education and training and the ENEN Ph.D. Event competition. |
