From 1 to 19 September this year, joint international radiation monitoring exercises were held in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone (CEZ) under a project of the German Federal Office for Radiation Protection and State Specialized Enterprise “Ecocenter” with the assistance of the German Embassy in Ukraine. The objective was to prepare an up-to-date map showing the distribution of Cs-137 radiation contamination and predict the nature of its changes.

Radioactive waste often has to be encapsulated for long-term storage. Usually, it’s placed in a steel drum that is filled with cement. But now there is a lower cost and more environmentally friendly option: SIAL®, a geopolymer encapsulation technology developed by Jacobs.

Switzerland plans to construct an underground repository for its radioactive waste by 2050. Three sites are under consideration. Researchers at PSI are providing data that will help in determining which is most suitable.

Instead of automated sampling for noble gases and analysing stations, manual system can be used to better accommodate costs for the equipment and flexibility of usage. One of this system has been developed by the Traceability Laboratory at the ENEA Research center of Brasimone, which was specially designed in order to keep the sampling equipment separate from the processing and measurement.
